Acne rosacea, also known as a type of “Adult Acne” attacks more adults than any other form of skin blemish condition. The International Rosacea Foundation estimates that worldwide, rosacea affects more than 100 million people of all ethnicities and backgrounds. Symptoms include visible blood vessels appearing in the cheeks, neck, and nose, pink or irritated eyes, and bumps, small cysts, puffiness and red face.
Some believe that rosacea is associated with excess alcohol consumption, but this is entirely untrue. Alcohol may aggravate an existing rosacea condition, but doctors agree that drinking is not the cause.
The specific causes of rosacea are unknown.
What is known, however, is that people suffering from rosacea do not “grow out of it,” as is the case with adolescent acne. The condition may go in and out of remission during one’s life. Treatment for rosacea is different that adolescent acne—in fact, using traditional acne creams can actually make the condition worse. Specialists advise avoiding the following: retinol, vitamin A or vitamin C, alcohol, and benzoyl peroxide.
The best rosacea treatments will often combine topical medication, a good cleanser, and the right moisturizer.
Some sufferers have found good results through an over-the-counter topical medication called Rosacea-Limited III. This skin care cream was designed for inflamed skin due to rosacea, and it will also treat seborrheic dermatitis and acne. It will lessen the appearance of red face (erythema) and dilated vessels in the face (telangectasia). Ingredients for the skin cream include zinc oxide, magnesium stearate, sodium chloride, iron oxide, copper oxide, polyethylene glycol, and sulfur.
Other rosacea creams are presented by Revlon, Allmay, Zenmed, Toleran and others. Zenmed has created a combination therapy of lotion, rosacea cream, and facial cleanser.
Cleansers should be simple and close to organic. The fewer ingredients, the better, and that includes perfumes and fragrances which can irritate your skin. Water-based moisturizers are less irritating than oil-based moisturizers, and some water-based moisturizers are available specifically for rosacea sufferers.
Keep in mind that the sun will irritate your rosacea, but so can certain types of sun block lotion. Choose a sunblock solution that contains titanium dioxide – it is less irritating than most.
